Zambia’s President Hichilema to Headline Mining Indaba 2024: Ushering in a New Era for African Mining

Zambia’s President Hakainde Hichilema will deliver a keynote address at Mining Indaba 2024, highlighting his ambitious plans to revitalize the country’s mining sector and position it as a major player in the global industry.

This marks Hichilema’s second appearance at the event since his landslide election in 2021, and it comes amidst a period of remarkable progress for Zambia’s mining industry.

Hichilema’s transformative vision revolves around several key pillars:

  • Boosting copper production: Aiming to increase annual output from 800,000 tonnes to 3 million tonnes by 2030, propelling Zambia further up the global ranking.
  • Creating a stable and attractive investment climate: Streamlining the mining tax framework, eliminating double taxation, and attracting major players like Barrick and First Quantum Minerals with multi-billion dollar investments.
  • Expanding beyond copper: Exploring the potential of critical minerals like cobalt, nickel, and manganese.
  • Fostering collaboration: Recognizing the power of partnerships between government, industry stakeholders, and investors to drive innovation and maximize socio-economic benefits.

Momentum Building in Zambia:

Hichilema’s leadership has already yielded tangible results. Barrick’s Lumwana mine, once unprofitable, is now poised to become a world-leading facility after a $2 billion expansion. First Quantum Minerals has brought the Enterprise Nickel Mine online and announced a $1.25 billion expansion to Kanshansi Copper Mine. Newcomers like Kobold Metals and International Resources are also investing heavily.

Beyond Mining:

The positive impact extends beyond the mining sector. The $250 million Lobito Corridor project, supported by the US and EU, will boost intra-regional trade and create jobs within Zambia.

Mining Indaba 2024: Embracing the Power of Positive Disruption:

Hichilema’s keynote address at Mining Indaba 2024, themed “Embracing the power of positive disruption,” will offer valuable insights into Zambia’s success story and provide attendees with a unique opportunity to understand the processes behind this remarkable transformation.

About Investing in African Mining Indaba:

Mining Indaba is the largest mining investment event in Africa, connecting Ministers, government representatives, mining companies, investors, and service providers. It’s the premier platform for deal-making, networking, and driving the African mining industry forward.

Zambia’s re-emergence as a top investment destination demonstrates the power of positive disruption, and Mining Indaba 2024 is ready to showcase the country’s journey and inspire similar success stories across the continent.
