WhatsApp Will Stop Working on These Phones Starting January 1, 2025
As the year 2025 begins, WhatsApp will cease to function on several outdated devices, primarily due to compatibility updates that require newer operating systems. This move impacts users whose phones cannot be upgraded to a more recent OS.
Compatibility Update
The first wave of changes will take effect on January 1, 2025, when WhatsApp stops supporting Android KitKat OS and earlier versions. Devices running on these older systems will no longer load the app, affecting users who continue using legacy devices. Later in the year, a similar phase-out will target older iPhones.
Affected Android Devices
For Android users, the following devices will lose WhatsApp functionality unless their OS can be upgraded:
- Samsung: Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note 2, Galaxy Ace 3, Galaxy S4 Mini
- Motorola: Moto G (1st Gen), Razr HD, Moto E 2014
- HTC: One X, One X+, Desire 500, Desire 601
- LG: Optimus G, Nexus 4, G2 Mini, L90
- Sony: Xperia Z, Xperia SP, Xperia T, Xperia V

Impact on iPhones
For iPhone users, the cutoff date is May 5, 2025, when WhatsApp will stop working on devices running iOS versions earlier than 15.1. The following iPhones will be affected if they cannot upgrade:
- iPhone 5s
- iPhone 6
- iPhone 6 Plus
These changes apply to both the standard WhatsApp app and WhatsApp Business.
Reason for the Updates
Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp, stated that these updates are part of routine measures to ensure the app remains secure, functional, and optimized for newer devices. While the number of affected users may not be substantial, Meta encourages users to upgrade their devices where possible to continue enjoying WhatsApp services.
