Tinubu Plans to Replace Underperforming Cabinet Members

In line with his commitment to regularly assess the performance of his cabinet members, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is poised to make changes by removing some ministers who are deemed to be “struggling in their new positions.” This decision follows a warning issued by President Tinubu during a cabinet retreat in November 2023, where he emphasized the importance of performance and accountability.

During the three-day retreat, President Tinubu stated, “You will sign a bond with me. If you are performing, nothing to fear; if you miss the objective, if you don’t perform, you leave us.” Unconfirmed reports suggest that at least five cabinet members facing challenges in fulfilling their portfolio mandates may be relieved of their duties.

Although the specific identities of these “struggling Ministers” remain undisclosed, sources indicate that around five individuals may face dismissal.

President Tinubu has redirected the focus of his administration’s priorities and assigned his Special Adviser on Policy Coordination, Hadiza Bala Usman, the responsibility to reactivate the “Presidential Delivery Tracker.” This tool aims to monitor and report the performances of cabinet members and was inaugurated in August 2023.

Additionally, there are indications that the ongoing corruption scandal involving two ministers, namely Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo and Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation Minister Dr. Betta Edu, may contribute to the impending changes.

President Tinubu has already suspended Edu from office, and Tunji-Ojo has been linked to a firm, New Planet Projects Ltd, which allegedly received N438 million as “consultancy fees” related to the National Social Register contract.

Furthermore, a vacancy in the Ministry of Labour and Employment is anticipated following the resignation of Simon Bako Lalong, a former Plateau State Governor, who stepped down to assume the position of Senator representing Plateau South Senatorial District in the National Assembly.
