Tinubu Approves Inland Dry Ports in Ogun and Oyo States to Boost Economy and Ease Port Congestion

In a groundbreaking move to revitalize Nigeria’s maritime sector and address the persistent congestion at Lagos ports, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the establishment of Inland Dry Ports (IDPs) in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, and Moniya, Oyo State.

The announcement, made by the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, during the 2025 Budget Defence session with the Senate and House Committees on Marine Transport and Ports, marks a significant step towards modernizing the nation’s maritime infrastructure.

Highlighting the impact of the new facilities, Oyetola described them as essential for easing the burden on the Western Port System while driving economic growth and creating jobs for youths in Ogun, Oyo, and neighboring regions. The IDPs will serve as critical hubs for transportation, storage, and distribution, spurring development in the western corridor.

“These IDPs are crucial for fast-tracking the decongestion of our Western Port System,” Oyetola stated, emphasizing their importance in alleviating pressure on existing infrastructure.

The Minister also addressed broader challenges facing Nigeria’s maritime sector, such as inadequate infrastructure, silted waterways, and low fish production. To tackle these issues, the Ministry has developed strategic initiatives aimed at enhancing operations and increasing revenue.

Notable achievements include the completion of key policy documents like the Nigeria National Blue Economy Strategy, the Fisheries and Aquaculture Policy, and a Strategic Roadmap for the Blue Economy, which collectively set the foundation for sustainable growth in the sector.

As part of its 2025 agenda, the Ministry plans to prioritize port infrastructure upgrades, strengthen maritime safety, and boost fish production to create more opportunities for Nigerians.

“With the 2025 Budget, we aim to build on our accomplishments, focusing on developing port infrastructure and fostering opportunities for Nigerians within the maritime sector,” Oyetola affirmed.

The establishment of these Inland Dry Ports is expected to significantly enhance the efficiency of Nigeria’s maritime operations, positioning the country for economic growth and a stronger global presence in the sector.
