Telecoms: PTECSSAN Suspends Planned Strike Following Agreement with Subcontractors
In a statement issued by its General Secretary, Okonu Abdullahi, on Wednesday, the union disclosed that the decision to suspend the strike was reached following agreements reached with the subcontractors it had grievances with.
The union had initially announced plans to embark on an indefinite strike starting from April 4, 2024, citing unresolved issues with subcontractors associated with Huawei Technologies Nigeria Ltd.
The subcontractors mentioned included Reime Group, Allstream Energy Solutions Ltd., Uppercrest Ltd., Tyllium Nigeria Ltd., and Specific Tools and Techniques Ltd.
According to the statement, discussions held at the union’s secretariat led to several agreements being reached. These agreements included the subcontracting companies recognizing the fundamental rights of their employees to freely associate with the union.
Furthermore, it was agreed that the companies would establish health facilities in compliance with the National Health Insurance Scheme, providing coverage for employees, their spouses, and up to four dependents, among other provisions.
PTECSSAN‘s demands included the immediate recognition of employees’ rights to association, acknowledgment of the union as the official negotiating body for workers’ welfare, and the proper remittance of membership dues.
Additionally, the union called for the regularization of employment for its members involved in Huawei projects, compliance with pension and health insurance regulations, and the initiation of negotiations for a collective bargaining agreement.

Despite efforts by the Ministry of Labour and Employment to address these concerns through conciliatory meetings, the companies allegedly failed to engage constructively, prompting the union to contemplate industrial action.
With the suspension of the strike, pending the fulfillment of the agreed-upon terms, PTECSSAN remains committed to advocating for the welfare and rights of telecommunications and communications staff in Nigeria.
