TCN Restores Grid, Supplies 2,686.135MW to 11 Discos
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) successfully restored the partially collapsed grid, ensuring the transmission of 64,467.24 megawatt-hours (MWH) of electricity, averaging 2,686.135 megawatts (MW), to the 11 Electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) on Sunday, February 4.
According to TCN‘s data, the total energy generated on that day reached 65,604.49 MWH, averaging 2,733.52 MW. However, a document from TCN by The Nation revealed that at 4:38 pm, the company sent out 2,651MW to the 11 DisCos.
Due to low energy generation, four DisCos received zero energy allocation from TCN during this period.
On Sunday, Ndidi Mbah, TCN‘s Public Affairs General Manager, issued a press statement at 9:26 pm, attributing the situation to a “partial system disturbance” caused by ongoing gas supply constraints. However, she assured the public that the grid had been fully restored.
Mbah’s statement highlighted that before the incident, the total generation on the grid stood at 3,901.25 MW at 8:00 am, a few hours before the partial collapse occurred. She emphasized the persistence of low power generation since January 2024, exacerbating daily due to ongoing gas constraints.

The statement also cited data from the National Control Center (NCC), revealing that just before the partial disturbance at 11:21 am, Sapele Steam and Egbin Substations lost 373.16 MW, contributing to the imbalance leading to the partial system disturbance.
Gas constraints continue to impact grid flexibility and stability, according to TCN. Ensuring sufficient gas supply to power generating stations is crucial for grid stability, allowing for better grid management in the event of sudden generation losses. TCN pledged to investigate the cause of the tripping of Sapele Steam and Egbin power-generating units.
