SON Confiscates N30.5 Million Worth of Electric Cables.

In a renewed effort to combat fake and substandard products, the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) seized counterfeit electrical cables and wires valued at N30.5 million in Ekiti State on Tuesday.

The operation followed intelligence reports indicating that some vendors in major markets were selling substandard cables. During the raid, SON’s taskforce sealed off several shops and confiscated the substandard items, loading them onto trucks for removal.

Pius Manji, Director of the Inspectorate and Compliance Department at SON, stated that the raid aimed to clean up the market of substandard cables and wires. Represented by Engr Joel Aboyeji, Manji emphasized the importance of preventing these dangerous items from entering circulation.

“The unscrupulous importer even went as far as cloning popular brands to deceive innocent and unsuspecting members of the public,” Manji said. “Such development could affect local manufacturers, investments in the sector, and pose grave dangers to households, many of which would be prone to fire outbreaks due to the use of these substandard products.”

Manji reiterated SON’s commitment to ensuring that only quality products are available in the market. He confirmed that the confiscated cables and wires would be destroyed and that SON would continue to prosecute electrical dealers who distribute fake products.

SON’s enforcement team will persist in targeting and apprehending importers and sellers of substandard electrical materials. Manji also warned dealers of electrical cables to desist from selling such products or risk continued seizures by the regulatory agency.

“Their actions not only sabotage and destroy local industries and our economy but also put the lives of Nigerians in danger,” he stressed.
