Sifax Group Chairman Lauds Annual Maritime Conference.

The sixth edition of the Taiwo Afolabi Annual Maritime Conference was held at the Ade Ajayi Auditorium, University of Lagos. Dr. Taiwo Afolabi, Chairman of the Sifax Group, commended the conference for its role in stimulating the minds of young individuals and advancing the maritime industry.

Represented by the Group Head of Corporate Communications, Muyiwa Akande, Dr. Afolabi highlighted the conference’s significance. Organized by the Maritime Forum of the University of Lagos and sponsored by the Sifax Group, the event focused on addressing critical issues within the maritime industry to aid the government in developing progressive policies and regulations.

Dr. Afolabi emphasized the conference’s impact on enlightening young minds about the diverse career opportunities in the maritime sector, fostering a connection between students and the industry. He underscored that the maritime industry offers numerous opportunities beyond shipping, such as coastal tourism.

“A lot of businesses can be set up along Nigeria’s coast, but many of these areas remain undeveloped. If the ministry maximizes shipping opportunities and explores other avenues, it will be beneficial. Renewable energy is another opportunity to generate electricity. We believe the government should explore these areas to generate income for the economy, involving the private sector,” Dr. Afolabi stated.

John Benson, President of the Maritime Forum, University of Lagos, introduced this year’s Blueprint Competition, which brought together students from ten Nigerian universities to present innovative ideas for the maritime industry. He urged the youth to drive change and called on maritime stakeholders to provide opportunities for student participation in the industry.

Dr. Emeka Akabogu, represented by Victor Onyegbado, delivered the keynote address titled “A Blueprint for Sustainable Shipping: The Significance of the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy.” He praised the conference theme for its relevance as Nigeria navigates the evolving dynamics of the global maritime industry.

Dr. Akabogu stressed that sustainable shipping is crucial for a resilient economy. It requires a comprehensive approach to ensure activities do not hinder future generations while maintaining ethical standards. He highlighted the need for a clear legal framework to support both traditional and non-traditional blue economy sectors, including aquaculture, tourism, real estate, telecommunication, energy, and natural resources.

He reiterated that sustaining shipping depends on economic growth without environmental degradation, responsible resource use, cleaner technologies, effective waste management, minimal pollution, and stringent regulations. Dr. Akabogu urged stakeholders to address port congestion, reverse environmental degradation, develop hinterlands, and create more jobs at river ports.

The conference concluded with a call to action for all participants to contribute towards a sustainable and thriving maritime industry in Nigeria.
