Shell’s Bonga Deep-Water Development Secures “Asset of the Year” Award for 2023

Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company Limited’s (SNEPCo) flagship deep-water project, Bonga, has once again clinched the prestigious “Asset of the Year” award within the Shell Group for its outstanding performance in Safety, Environment, and Asset Management in 2023.

This recognition underscores Bonga’s consistent commitment to excellence, having previously secured the same award in 2016 and being the first runner-up in 2019. The accolade acknowledges Bonga’s exemplary achievements in areas such as production enhancement, maintenance, problem-solving capabilities, operational excellence, and cost management.

In surpassing targets for oil production, plant availability, and minimizing greenhouse gas emissions, Bonga demonstrated its operational prowess yet again this year. Notably, the asset achieved zero fatalities and spills, reflecting a robust safety culture ingrained since its inception in 2005.

Elohor Aiboni, Managing Director of SNEPCo, lauded the collective efforts of staff, contractors, and the unwavering support of stakeholders, including the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited and co-venturers such as TotalEnergies Nigeria Limited, Nigerian Agip Exploration, and Esso Exploration and Production Nigeria Limited. Aiboni emphasized how this collaborative spirit has enabled Bonga to consistently deliver value safely and efficiently.

SNEPCo’s success with Bonga can be attributed to several key factors, including a highly motivated workforce, utilization of cutting-edge technology, and an unyielding commitment to safety standards. In a milestone achievement last year, the Floating, Production, Storage, Offloading (FPSO) vessel, the cornerstone of Bonga’s operations, celebrated the export of its one billionth barrel of crude oil.

This latest accolade further solidifies Shell’s position as a leading player in Nigeria’s oil and gas industry. In addition to Bonga’s success, Shell Companies in Nigeria have garnered numerous awards in recent years, including Best International Company of the Year by the Petroleum Technology Association of Nigeria, Upstream Company of the Year at the Nigeria International Energy Summit, and recognition as the Leading Tax Compliant Firm in Nigeria by the Federal Inland Revenue Service in 2022.
