Shell Wins Best Upstream Company 2024 Award at Energy Summit in Abuja.
Shell Nigeria has been honored with the Best Upstream Company 2024 award at the ongoing Nigerian International Energy Summit (NIES) in Abuja. The prestigious accolade, received by Senior Vice President, Nigeria Marno de Jong, recognizes the significant contributions of Shell companies in Nigeria, particularly The Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Ltd (SPDC) and Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company (SNEPCo), which have been pioneers in onshore and offshore oil production, respectively.
“We’re pleased at the recognition of our efforts in the Upstream sector in Nigeria,” said Marno de Jong while accepting the award. “We’re grateful to our partners, particularly the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC), regulatory agencies, host communities, and other stakeholders for their support in our operations. We look forward to continued cooperation as we power progress in Nigeria.”

Shell’s pioneering role in Nigeria’s oil industry dates back to 1958, when SPDC achieved the country’s first oil export, launching Nigeria into the league of oil-producing nations. SNEPCo further expanded operations with the commencement of production at Bonga, Nigeria’s first deep-water well, in 2005.
Over the years, Shell’s operations have contributed significantly to national development, providing crucial revenues, skill acquisition opportunities for Nigerians in the oil industry, and fostering the growth of indigenous businesses. The company also maintains a robust social investment portfolio, which has improved lives across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones.
Osagie Okunbor, Chairman of Shell Companies in Nigeria and Managing Director of SPDC, emphasized the company’s ongoing commitment to Nigeria’s future through recent investments.
“The NIES award also celebrates our dedication to Nigeria’s growth. Our latest investments include SPDC’s construction of a facility in Iseni, Bayelsa State, set to supply 100 million standard cubic feet of gas per day (MMScF/d) to the Dangote Fertiliser and Petrochemical Plant in Lekki, Lagos State.
Additionally, SNEPCo has taken the Final Investment Decision (FID) on the $5 billion Bonga North deep-water project, reinforcing our long-term partnership with Nigeria.”
