Shell Clinches Best Upstream Company 2024 Award at NIES Summit in Abuja
Shell Nigeria has been awarded the prestigious Best Upstream Company 2024 accolade at the ongoing Nigerian International Energy Summit (NIES) in Abuja. The award, received by Senior Vice President, Nigeria Marno de Jong, acknowledges Shell’s remarkable contributions to Nigeria’s oil and gas sector, particularly through its subsidiaries – The Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Ltd (SPDC) and Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company (SNEPCo).
Shell’s pioneering role in Nigeria’s oil industry dates back to 1958, when SPDC achieved the country’s first oil export, placing Nigeria among the league of oil-producing nations. In 2005, SNEPCo further expanded Shell’s footprint with the launch of production at Bonga, Nigeria’s first deep-water oil field.
Over the decades, Shell’s operations have significantly contributed to Nigeria’s national development, generating vital revenues, promoting skills acquisition for Nigerians, and fostering the growth of indigenous businesses. The company also maintains a robust social investment portfolio, impacting communities across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones.
Osagie Okunbor, Chairman of Shell Companies in Nigeria and Managing Director of SPDC, emphasized Shell’s commitment to Nigeria’s growth through recent investments. “The NIES award celebrates our dedication to Nigeria’s development. Our latest projects include SPDC’s construction of a facility in Iseni, Bayelsa State, designed to supply 100 million standard cubic feet of gas per day (MMScF/d) to the Dangote Fertiliser and Petrochemical Plant in Lekki, Lagos State. Additionally, SNEPCo’s Final Investment Decision (FID) on the $5 billion Bonga North deep-water project reinforces our long-term partnership with Nigeria.”
The award was presented during the Gala Dinner and Award Night of the 2025 edition of the Nigerian International Energy Summit, attended by top Shell officials including SNEPCo’s Managing Director Ronald Adams, Shell Nigeria Gas Managing Director Ralph Gbobo, and General Manager of Shell Energy Nigeria Markus Hector.
