Setting the Record Straight: Meritocracy and Milestones at NNPC

By Olufemi Soneye

In response to Farooq Kperogi’s recent article, “Tinubu’s Buharisation of the NNPC,” it is imperative to address some critical misconceptions and provide clarity regarding the operations and leadership structure of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited. Mischaracterizations of this nature have the potential to misinform the public and undermine the significant progress achieved by the NNPC under its current leadership.

Commitment to Meritocracy

At the heart of the NNPC’s operations is a steadfast commitment to meritocracy. Employment, promotions, appointments, and leadership movements within the company are determined solely by merit, expertise, and business needs. Decisions are made based on the qualifications and capabilities of individuals, ensuring that only the best minds occupy positions crucial to the company’s success.

This approach has been the foundation of the NNPC’s focus on efficient service delivery, driven by a team of qualified and dedicated professionals. The company takes pride in being a professional organization with a diverse leadership team that includes individuals from across Nigeria and beyond. The inclusion of skilled foreigners further strengthens the NNPC’s value chain, enhancing the production and distribution of allied products.

It is, therefore, disheartening to see a scholar of Mr. Kperogi’s caliber resort to divisive rhetoric, emphasizing ethnic identities to criticize the work team composition at the NNPC. Such narratives detract from the achievements of a disciplined leadership that upholds professionalism and meritocracy.

Milestones Achieved Under Mele Kyari

Under the leadership of Mele Kyari, the NNPC has recorded groundbreaking achievements and “firsts” in the energy sector. These accomplishments are the result of a collective drive for excellence, rather than being influenced by tribal or religious considerations. Among these milestones are advancements in exploration, production, and global partnerships, which were once deemed unattainable.

These successes are not just symbolic but substantive, reflecting a commitment to innovation, strategic thinking, and professionalism. It is vital to recognize that these milestones were achieved through a unified focus on national growth and excellence, not parochialism.

President Tinubu’s Transformative Leadership

Contrary to the insinuations in Mr. Kperogi’s article, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has not interfered in the operations or leadership of the NNPC. On the contrary, his administration has introduced transformative policies that have added immense value to Nigeria’s oil and gas sector.

President Tinubu has prioritized institutional independence, empowering entities like the NNPC to operate autonomously while fostering an environment that encourages growth and innovation. His reforms have not only revitalized the sector but have also set benchmarks that surpass the achievements of many past administrations.

These policies have led to significant economic improvements, strengthening Nigeria’s position as a global player in the energy industry. It is, therefore, disappointing that commentators like Mr. Kperogi, who are well-versed in global governance practices, would choose to focus on divisive narratives rather than acknowledge these accomplishments.

Invitation to Witness the Facts

The NNPC extends an open invitation to Mr. Kperogi to visit the organization and witness firsthand the professionalism, sacrifices, and relentless efforts that drive Nigeria’s economic engine. This invitation offers an opportunity to see a dedicated team working tirelessly to foster economic growth and national prosperity.

It is crucial that public discourse surrounding institutions like the NNPC be based on factual evidence rather than conjecture. Symbolism and rhetoric should not overshadow the tangible achievements and transformative impact of policies and leadership.

Commitment to Unity and Progress

The NNPC remains resolute in its mission to foster unity, embrace diversity, and uphold the principles of meritocracy. By maintaining these commitments, the organization continues to strengthen national cohesion and position Nigeria as a global leader in the energy sector.

As stakeholders and commentators evaluate the NNPC’s progress, we urge them to base their assessments on verifiable facts and evidence. The focus should remain on the collective good of our nation, ensuring that national development and economic growth are prioritized above all else.

In conclusion, the NNPC’s achievements under its current leadership are a testament to the power of meritocracy, professionalism, and a unified vision for national progress. It is through these principles that the organization will continue to drive Nigeria’s economic growth and contribute to the prosperity of all Nigerians.
