Seplat Energy Wins Big at SERAS Awards, Bags Best in Social Impact and Human Capacity Development Prize
Seplat Energy Plc, a leading independent energy company in Nigeria, has emerged as the winner of the prestigious Best in Social Impact and Human Capacity Development award at the 18th edition of the Sustainability, Enterprise, and Responsibility Awards (SERAS) Africa 2024.
The glittering ceremony, which took place at the Oriental Hotel in Lagos, showcased Seplat Energy’s groundbreaking achievements in corporate social responsibility, particularly in the areas of health, education, and entrepreneurship. The organisers commended the company’s impactful initiatives, which have significantly benefitted its host communities and states.
Outstanding Contributions to Host Communities
The SERAS Awards, regarded as Africa’s gold standard in sustainability recognition, aims to highlight organisations making meaningful contributions to economic, social, and environmental development. Seplat Energy’s educational and social programmes align closely with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 1, 3, and 4, which target poverty eradication, good health, and quality education.

- Seplat Teachers Empowerment Programme (STEP): Aimed at equipping teachers and Chief Inspectors of Education with digital skills, leadership training, and income diversification strategies.
- PEARLs Quiz: An academic competition that awards scholarships to exceptional secondary school students and funds infrastructure upgrades in winning schools.
- National Undergraduate Scholarship: Launched in 2014, this programme has provided financial support to hundreds of university students, particularly from Seplat’s host communities.
- Innovation Programme: Facilitates the creation of STEAM laboratories, encouraging hands-on learning in science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics.
- Eye Can See Initiative: Offers free eye care services, including screenings, surgeries, and eyeglasses, to thousands of underserved residents in host communities.

Speaking at the event, Ken Egbas, founder of SERAS Africa, praised Seplat Energy and other awardees for their exemplary commitment to sustainability and social responsibility. “These organisations have demonstrated leadership in creating a more sustainable and inclusive Africa.
