Seplat Energy Named Best in Social Impact and Human Capacity Development at SERAS 2024

Seplat Energy Plc, a leading Nigerian independent energy company, has been honored as the “Best in Social Impact and Human Capacity Development” at the 2024 Sustainability, Enterprise, and Responsibility Awards (SERAS) Africa. The prestigious accolade was announced during the 18th edition of the SERAS Africa Awards held at the Oriental Hotel in Lagos, Nigeria.

The award celebrates Seplat Energy’s outstanding corporate social investment initiatives across health, education, and entrepreneurship, with significant and measurable impacts in its host communities and states. The organizers highlighted the company’s programs as exemplary contributions to sustainable development in Africa.

Recognizing Leadership in Sustainability

SERAS Africa, an annual event, aims to spotlight and promote the essential role of organizations in advancing sustainability and social development on the continent. By focusing on corporate responsibility towards stakeholders and community development, the awards emphasize the long-term benefits of economic, social, and environmental capital for socially responsible corporations.

Seplat Energy’s initiatives are closely aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 1 (No Poverty), SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), and SDG 4 (Quality Education). These alignments are reflected in several impactful programs:

  • Seplat Teachers Empowerment Programme (STEP): Equips teachers and Chief Inspectors of Education with digital teaching skills, leadership training, and income diversification capabilities, enhancing the quality of education delivery.
  • PEARLs Quiz: Rewards secondary school students with scholarships and provides financial prizes to schools, directly improving educational infrastructure.
  • Seplat National Undergraduate Scholarships: Since 2014, this program has supported undergraduate students in federal and state universities, with a significant percentage of beneficiaries drawn from Seplat’s host communities.
  • Seplat Innovators Programme: Establishes STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) laboratories, promoting hands-on, integrated learning experiences in schools.
  • Seplat JV Eye Can See Programme: Offers free eye care services, including screenings, surgeries, and eyeglasses, to thousands of underserved individuals in host communities.

Driving Sustainable Impact Across Africa

Speaking at the ceremony, Ken Egbas, Founder of SERAS Africa, commended Seplat Energy and other winners for their exceptional commitment to sustainability and leadership in advancing socio-economic development. “These organizations have set a standard of excellence that must be celebrated,” Egbas stated.

The awards ceremony brought together stakeholders from various sectors, including private corporations, non-profits, public sector representatives, industry regulators, and media, all uniting to celebrate the progress made towards sustainable development in Africa.

Seplat Energy’s recognition at SERAS 2024 reinforces its status as a leader in driving impactful social change, strengthening its position as a key partner in Africa’s journey toward sustainability and development.
