Seplat Energy- Gas is Nigeria’s logical transition fuel
Seplat Energy asserts that gas serves as Nigeria’s logical transition fuel, addressing immediate challenges while paving the way for long-term solutions. Effiong Okon, Director of New Energy at Seplat Energy, highlighted this perspective during the Gas Stakeholders Conversation at the 2024 Nigeria International Energy Summit in Abuja.
Okon emphasized the pivotal role of gas development in addressing Nigeria’s energy needs, including power generation, LNG export, CNG production, fertilizer manufacturing, LPG production, and building materials production. He underscored the potential of gas to alleviate housing and infrastructure shortages, reduce biomass cooking-related fatalities, and enhance agricultural productivity.
Furthermore, Okon highlighted the potential for reducing reliance on petrol and decarbonizing domestic transportation through gas utilization, thereby bolstering sustainability efforts. Citing the IEA Global Energy Outlook 2022, he noted the projected growth of natural gas production in Africa, particularly in Egypt, Nigeria, and Mozambique.
Okon emphasized the importance of adopting comprehensive solutions across the entire gas value chain, from exploration and production to processing and distribution. He outlined key factors for sustainable gas development, including securing bankable projects, accessing low-cost capital, leveraging technology to reduce losses, and implementing innovative revenue collection mechanisms.
At the NIES 2024 Award Ceremony, Seplat Energy was honored with the Gas Infrastructure Project of the Year award, underscoring its commitment to advancing gas development in Nigeria. Mr. Okon accepted the award on behalf of the company’s management and staff.
