Senegal saw its energy production double over the past six years. The country’s power generating capacity has gone from 500 MW in 2012 to 1,141 MW in 2018.

The news was announced by the country’s president, Macky Sall, during his message to the nation. “We must add, in the very short term, two projects of 60 MW solar and 150 MW wind turbine,” said President Sall.

In addition, 3,000 km of electric transmission lines have been installed to modernize and densify the national electricity grid, making it possible to stop load shedding in the country. Indeed, the cumulative hours of load shedding went from 950 hours of cuts in 2011 to 24 hours accumulated for the year 2018.

An additional 2,329 villages were electrified, allowing 3.3 million people to access electricity since 2012. It is also expected that an additional 300 villages will be electrified soon.
