President Tinubu Condemns Vandalism of Electricity Cables and Other Infrastructures
President Bola Tinubu has expressed strong condemnation of the ongoing vandalism of electricity cables and other essential infrastructure across Nigeria, labeling these actions as “pure acts of sabotage.” This declaration underscores the urgent need for a change in the value system among Nigerians to address the nation’s challenges effectively.
The President’s remarks follow a series of destructive incidents targeting the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), with the latest involving the newly rebuilt T193 and T194 towers along the Damaturu-Maiduguri 330kV single circuit transmission line.
In a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, President Tinubu articulated his concerns during a meeting in Lagos with a delegation from the National Assembly, led by Senate President Godswill Akpabio. The delegation visited the President to extend Eid-el-Kabir greetings.
“Good economics at a harsh time is the challenge that we must face. As I said in my speech, no matter how difficult it is and how challenging it can be, I will not turn my back on Nigeria,” President Tinubu stated. He emphasized the absurdity of actions such as the removal of rail tracks and the theft of electric cables, which he sees as economic sabotage. “We must embrace the campaign to change our value system. We must tell our people that the challenge we face is for all of us to change our mindset about our country,” he added.
President Tinubu called for a shift away from a rent-seeking mentality towards one that is more productive for the economy, highlighting the need to combat smuggling and other forms of economic sabotage. He acknowledged the prevalent poverty and suffering in the country but reaffirmed his commitment to confronting these issues head-on.
“We must find a way to eliminate banditry and terrorism so that farmers can bring out food from the farmland,” he said. He also pointed out the necessity of good infrastructure, such as roads, to ensure that food produced on farms can reach the population without significant losses due to damage.
The President praised the National Assembly’s leadership for its support, which he credits for some of the significant progress his administration has made. Following the meeting, Senate President Godswill Akpabio spoke to journalists, indicating that Nigerians should anticipate new legislation aimed at improving the ease of doing business in the country. “Looking forward, the National Assembly will tinker with some existing legislations to further improve on the nation’s ease of doing business,” Akpabio stated.
