The Nigerian Shippers Council (NSC) is committed to modernizing ports and terminals with eco-friendly technology and infrastructure to enhance operational efficiency and minimize environmental impact, according to its Executive Secretary and CEO, Mr. Pius Akutah.
Speaking at a recent event in Lagos, Mr. Akutah, represented by NSC Director of Legal Services, Bala Saleh, emphasized that these efforts are central to supporting Nigeria’s long-term economic growth.
“Modernizing our ports and terminals with eco-friendly technology and infrastructure is at the core of our mission. By minimizing environmental impact and enhancing operational efficiency, we support Nigeria’s long-term economic growth,” Akutah said.
The NSC is also driving research into alternative fuels and green shipping practices, reflecting its dedication to sustainability in the maritime sector. Mr. Akutah noted that developing local expertise through capacity-building initiatives is critical for equipping professionals with knowledge of sustainable maritime practices.
Supporting Regional and Global Trade
As part of its broader mission, the council aims to foster knowledge exchange under the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA). This initiative seeks to empower Nigerian businesses to compete effectively across the continent while positioning Nigeria as a leader in green maritime operations.
“Aligning our legal frameworks with international standards will create an enabling environment for sustainable practices and position Nigeria as a reliable partner in the global maritime industry,” Akutah added.
