PCNGI Urges Compliance After Explosion at Edo CNG Station

The Presidential CNG Initiative (PCNGI) has raised concerns over an explosion at the NIPCO CNG Station in Ikpoba Hill, Benin City, Edo State, which involved a CNG-powered vehicle and left three people injured. The incident occurred on Wednesday and has been described as preventable by PCNGI.

In a statement, PCNGI expressed its sympathies to those affected and emphasized the critical importance of adhering to safety standards when handling Compressed Natural Gas (CNG). Initial investigations indicate that the vehicle’s CNG cylinder had been illegally welded and modified, making it unsafe and contributing to the accident.

PCNGI further noted that a thorough investigation has been initiated by authorities, including the police, regulatory agencies, and NIPCO management, and that they are cooperating closely with these bodies to determine the exact cause and to prevent similar incidents in the future.

The initiative urged all stakeholders to adhere strictly to regulations and advised motorists to use only accredited CNG conversion centers to ensure safety.

“This incident reiterates the urgency of our soon-to-be-launched Nigeria Gas Vehicle Monitoring System, in collaboration with the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC), and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC). The system aims to address non-compliance in the CNG ecosystem, ensuring that this safer, cleaner, and more reliable fuel source remains secure for all users,” PCNGI stated on Thursday.

The statement called for cooperation with the new regulatory system, emphasizing that safety must be a priority when handling CNG. “Only accredited conversion centers should be used, and CNG should be handled with the same care as petrol to ensure safety for everyone,” it added.
