Over N612bn Niger Delta projects cancelled, abandoned – NDDC report
An Executive Summary
According to a report from the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), a total of 1,587 projects valued at N612.4bn have been terminated and abandoned in the Niger Delta region. The report revealed that
- 1,262 projects worth N407.75bn were terminated, while 325 projects worth N204.64bn were stalled or abandoned. This accounts for 7.4% and 1.9% of the total contract values, respectively.
- The report also provided a breakdown of the status of projects in the region, stating that 7,140 projects worth N1.66tn have been completed, 3,251 ongoing projects worth N1.5tn, and 5,035 projects worth N1.45tn not yet implemented.
- Additionally, 32 projects worth N21.55bn have been taken over by other agencies.
- The report highlighted the NDDC’s adoption of the Public Private Partnership model to drive sustainable development in the region and the establishment of a management committee on public private partnership for this purpose.
- In July, the Managing Director of NDDC emphasized the need for collaboration with stakeholders and development partners to enhance development in the Niger Delta region.
- The Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs also expressed the intention to use strategies like policy dialogues to fast-track development in the region.
- The aim is to review past efforts and create a new roadmap based on probity and corporate governance structure.
