Our plan is to build a net zero carbon company – Joliva Oil CEO
The President and Chief Executive Officer of Joliva Oil and Gas Services, Chuks Otalor, has advised the federal government to sustain its renewable energy policy.
Speaking at the Nigerian Oil and Gas (NOG) Energy Week Conference and Exhibition, Otalor said the target of his company is to build a net zero carbon company that would be sustainable in the next 20 to 30 years.
Otalor said, “For my company, I think with regards to renewable energy, that’s the way to go. Everything that we are doing now we have to be thinking about the climate and the climate issues that are going to be happening.
“Our plan is to go net zero carbon as a company and hopefully in 20-30 years, it will be stable. I believe renewable energy is the way to go and I believe that we should begin to talk about it and dialogue about it. We should begin to hold conferences with other people to make sure that we have the right tools and policies that will take us there.
“It’s going to take a little while and as a developing country, sometimes change is a problem. We don’t adapt quickly to changes, it takes time. For me, first, oil and gas will be there, but we need to start dialoguing about these changes.
“It’s going to take time because the change won’t come all of a sudden, but the most important thing is to begin to talk about it, hold meetings and conferences on how we are going to change it and what we need to get to where we are going.”
Speaking on the efforts of his company to meet the target of net zero carbon, Otalor said, “Right now I’m going through training with the Oil and Gas Institute of America as a founder and it will help me set up policies.
“There is a policy called Environmental Social Governance, ESG. That package is going to help us as a company to have knowledge of the environment and social responsibility as we go to net zero carbon. I’m going through the training myself to have knowledge and from there, as a company that will be a foundation for us as we go into this new phase of sustainable energy.

“For me, one of the things that needs to be changed is our mindset. When you have been in a space of fossil fuels depending on oil, renewable energy is leaning into gas and the change will come from having more knowledge.
“One of the types of knowledge is for people to change their mindset about where we are going. Change is difficult because it is something you are used to. So how can I make you begin to change and review what you used to do?
“That is an area that will be a challenge for us. What will help to bridge that challenge will be awareness and making companies, staff, and people in general; bring knowledge to them and tell them why we need to start going this way.
