NNPCL, Military, and Police Hold Crucial Meeting to Combat Oil Theft and Pipeline Vandalism.
In a decisive move to curb the rampant oil theft and pipeline vandalism plaguing the Niger Delta, the Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Mele Kyari, held a high-level meeting with the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa, and the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, on Tuesday. This urgent meeting aimed to strategize on swiftly ending these criminal activities that have severely impacted the country’s oil production and revenue.
Addressing the press after the meeting, Kyari highlighted that President Bola Tinubu had issued a directive to the CDS to urgently tackle the issue of oil theft to boost crude production and national revenue. He stated, “The President has directed the CDS to take control of the crisis we are having in the Niger Delta operational area. Oil theft and pipeline vandalism have become a national issue, the President has directed the CDS to contain this within the shortest possible time so that we can restore national production to the level the President and the country is expecting.”
Kyari underscored the gravity of the situation, noting that Nigeria’s crude oil production had fallen from a peak of 2.2 million barrels per day to a struggling 1.2 million barrels per day due to these illicit activities. He emphasized that achieving economic stability is impossible without addressing the crisis in the Niger Delta, stating, “Without restoring oil and gas production, we cannot have the economic stability that we desire.”
