NUPRC Advocates for ADR to Boost Nigeria’s Oil and Gas Industry.
The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) has emphasized the importance of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) as a catalyst for growth in the country’s oil and gas industry. The Commission’s Chief Executive, Gbenga Komolafe, highlighted that the adoption of ADR would lead to quicker case resolutions, fostering a more stable and harmonious business environment within the sector.
Speaking at a Stakeholders Consultation on ADR held in Lagos, Komolafe, who was represented by the Executive Commissioner for Development & Production, Enorense Amadasu, underscored the significant role that ADR could play in enhancing the efficiency, fairness, and effectiveness of dispute resolution within the upstream oil industry. He noted that the NUPRC’s Resolution Centre, established in 2021, is a testament to the Commission’s commitment to providing a robust framework for resolving disputes in a timely and cost-effective manner.
“Today marks a significant step forward in our ongoing efforts to enhance efficiency, fairness, and effectiveness of alternative dispute resolution within the upstream industry,” said Komolafe. He further elaborated that the ADR Centre (ADRC) was designed to operate with the highest standards of transparency, integrity, and responsiveness, aligning with the needs of the industry.
Komolafe highlighted that the ADRC’s establishment was not just an administrative move but a strategic initiative aimed at reducing the burden on courts, lowering litigation costs, and promoting a more collaborative approach to resolving disputes. “The timely and equitable resolution of disputes within this critical sector is not just essential but paramount,” he added, stressing that ADR mechanisms would reinforce industry stability and catalyze sustainable growth.

Komolafe invited participants to engage constructively, emphasizing that their insights would be crucial in refining the rules to better serve the needs of all stakeholders.
Looking forward, Komolafe expressed confidence that the ADRC would evolve into a dynamic institution capable of adapting to the changing needs and challenges of the oil and gas industry, ultimately becoming a beacon of excellence in dispute resolution.
