NNPC/TotalEnergies JV Achieves Zero Routine Gas Flaring, Boosting Nigeria’s Climate Goals
The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) and TotalEnergies joint venture (JV) have announced a significant milestone in their sustainability efforts, achieving zero routine gas flaring across all their assets. This accomplishment marks a major step forward in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and aligns with Nigeria’s climate commitments under the Paris Agreement.
The announcement came during an inspection tour of the OML 100 oil field in the Niger Delta, where the final remaining routine gas flare was extinguished. This achievement culminates a project launched in December 2023 specifically focused on eliminating flaring at OML 100.
Previously, the JV had already achieved zero routine flaring in three other concessions: OML 99 (2006), OML 102 (2014), and OML 58 (2016). The elimination of the final flare at OML 100 translates to a reduction of approximately 12 million standard cubic feet of gas per day being flared, leading to an estimated annual greenhouse gas reduction of 341,000 tons of CO2 equivalent.

NNPC Ltd emphasizes that this achievement aligns with their commitment to sustainability and their “5R Strategy,” which prioritizes reducing their carbon footprint. They are now focusing on extending this success to their other assets, aiming to achieve zero routine flaring across their entire upstream portfolio by 2030 or even earlier.
This news is encouraging for both environmental and economic reasons. It demonstrates progress towards mitigating climate change and aligns with global efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Additionally, it represents a valuable resource recovery, as the captured gas can be utilized for other purposes, potentially generating economic benefits.
