NNPC Ltd/First E&P JV Slashes Routine Gas Flaring by 96%

In a major step towards reducing Nigeria’s greenhouse gas emissions, the NNPC Ltd and First Exploration & Petroleum Development Company Limited (First E&P) Joint Venture (JV) has successfully cut routine gas flaring by 96% at the Anyala (OML 83) and Madu (OML 85) fields.

This achievement aligns with Nigeria’s commitment under the Paris Agreement to lower emissions by 20% unconditionally and 47% conditionally. The reduction was made possible through an innovative associated gas (AG) reinjection strategy, which stores gas in an underground reservoir at the Madu field, offshore Bayelsa State. This move not only curbs environmental pollution but also enhances sustainable energy practices.

The initiative complies with the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission’s (NUPRC) guidelines, reinforcing the JV’s adherence to national environmental policies and global industry standards.

Reducing our carbon footprint is crucial to securing a sustainable energy future for both the environment and local communities.”

Looking ahead, the JV aims to commercialize the stored gas and other stranded gas resources in the Niger Delta, reinforcing its commitment to environmental protection and sustainable energy development.
