NNPC Foundation Ltd/Gte Launches Vision Restoration, STEM Book Donation, and Farmer Training Initiatives
The NNPC Foundation Ltd/Gte, the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) arm of NNPC Ltd., is making significant strides in healthcare, education, and agriculture through three groundbreaking initiatives aimed at transforming lives across Nigeria.
Restoring Vision for 6,000 Nigerians
Building on the success of its free cataract surgery program in the South-West—where 1,002 surgeries have already been performed, including for children born blind—the NNPC Foundation is expanding its reach to the South-East and South-South regions. This initiative will later extend to the three Northern regions and the FCT to ensure nationwide impact.
Cataracts account for over 43% of blindness cases in Nigeria, making this intervention crucial. The program aims to restore sight to 6,000 beneficiaries—1,000 from each geopolitical zone—by offering free screenings, surgeries, and post-operative care. The next phase is set to launch on March 31, 2025, in the South-East and South-South regions.
Bridging the Education Gap with STEM Book Donations
To foster interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) and provide better learning resources, the NNPC Foundation will distribute 25,000 STEM textbooks and branded bookshelves to 25 secondary schools across 24 states and the FCT. This is part of the second phase of the initiative, following the successful distribution of 15,000 STEM books in the first phase across twelve states and the FCT.
This initiative is designed to address the lack of quality STEM learning resources, which has contributed to the low enrollment of Nigerian students in science and technology courses at the tertiary level.
Training 6,000 Farmers for Agricultural Advancement
Recognizing the role of agriculture in economic growth, the NNPC Foundation is also launching a nationwide training program to equip 6,000 vulnerable farmers with modern agricultural techniques. The first phase, scheduled for April 7-11, 2025, will train 1,000 farmers in the South-East and South-South regions. Participants will learn about climate-smart farming, organic fertilization, post-harvest loss reduction, and market access strategies. The training will take place in three strategic locations across three geopolitical zones.
A Commitment to a Brighter Future
Speaking on the significance of these initiatives, Mrs. Emmanuella Arukwe, Managing Director of NNPC Foundation, stated:
“NNPC Foundation is committed to creating meaningful change by addressing critical societal challenges. Restoring sight, equipping students with learning resources, and empowering vulnerable farmers are not just interventions but strategic investments in Nigeria’s future.”
She further emphasized that these initiatives reflect NNPC Ltd.’s unwavering commitment to improving the health, education, and economic well-being of Nigerians. By tackling these pressing issues, the Foundation is helping to build a healthier, stronger, and more economically empowered nation.
