NMDPRA Pushes for Energy Transition, Recommends Phase-out of Traditional Outlets
The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) has called for a strategic shift in Nigeria’s energy landscape, advocating for the phase-out of traditional petroleum retail outlets in favor of facilities equipped to handle Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG).
NMDPRA’s Executive Director, Ogbugo Ukoha, highlighted the declining demand for diesel and kerosene, emphasizing the need for a more efficient and sustainable energy distribution system. The Authority aims to streamline operations by prioritizing LPG and CNG, which offer cleaner and more efficient energy solutions.
Key Points:
- Phase-out of Traditional Outlets: NMDPRA recommends decommissioning outdated petroleum retail outlets to make way for LPG and CNG infrastructure.
- Investment in Infrastructure: The Authority emphasizes the need for significant investment in Nigeria’s coastal and port facilities to accommodate larger vessels and reduce transportation costs.
- Technology Adoption: NMDPRA encourages the adoption of technology to improve efficiency and transparency in the petroleum industry, including the use of automated trucks and digital licensing.
- National Strategic Petroleum Reserve: The Authority is working to establish a 60-day storage capacity for all petroleum products to ensure supply stability during emergencies.
By implementing these measures, NMDPRA aims to drive Nigeria’s energy transition, reduce reliance on fossil fuels, and improve the overall efficiency and sustainability of the petroleum sector.
