NLNG Refutes Misinformation, Clarifies No Total Shutdown in Operations

The Nigerian Liquefied and Natural Gas (NLNG) has responded to a report in Thisday newspaper dated November 12, 2023, titled “Gas Supply Constraints May Worsen in Nigeria, Europe as NLNG Embarks on Plant Maintenance by February 2024.” NLNG expresses its concern regarding the inaccuracies in the report and clarifies that the information presented is false.

Contrary to the report’s claims, NLNG affirms that the proposed maintenance operation scheduled for February or March 2024 does not involve a total shutdown of its six-train plant. The company emphasizes that routine turnaround maintenance, which may temporarily take a specific train or unit offline for maintenance purposes, does not result in a complete shutdown of the entire plant.

This essential activity is meticulously planned and executed to ensure the safe and uninterrupted functioning of the plant, with the seamless transfer of production loads to unaffected trains, thereby minimizing the impact on overall production. NLNG underscores that the described “shutdown” is a routine turnaround maintenance and is part of the company’s production calendar.

NLNG expresses disappointment at the lack of factual accuracy in the report and highlights the absence of discretion. The company reiterates its commitment to maintaining high standards in safety and project management during turnaround maintenance, citing past global achievements such as the successful deployment of the Add-On Gate Valve (AOGV) technology in 2022.

NLNG was the first plant in Africa to implement this technology, replacing a critical valve while the plant remained online and active, showcasing engineering excellence and unparalleled maintenance execution discipline.

The report’s lack of balance and failure to seek comments from NLNG’s spokesperson is noted by the company, and it emphasizes the importance of accurate reporting in conveying the nuanced details of the energy industry. NLNG urges responsible journalism and calls for accurate representation of information to ensure public understanding of the company’s commitment to operational efficiency and safety.
