NLNG Empowers Women Journalists with Digital Communication Skills Training
Nigeria LNG Limited (NLNG) successfully wrapped up its most recent edition of the #NLNGChangeYourStory workshops on Thursday. The workshops were specifically designed to empower women journalists by enhancing their proficiency in advanced digital communication and social media skills. The focus was on equipping them to report effectively on gender-based issues.
From January 30 to February 1, 2024, the annual workshop, themed “Gender Active,” convened women journalists with diverse editorial backgrounds and members of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) in Lagos. Sponsored by NLNG, the workshop specifically delved into mobile and multimedia journalism, providing participants with a comprehensive learning experience.
Mr. Andy Odeh, NLNG’s General Manager of External Relations and Sustainable Development, highlighted the workshop’s alignment with NLNG’s commitment to Diversity, Equality, and Inclusiveness. He emphasized the pivotal role of women journalists in shaping narratives and influencing public opinion for a better Nigeria.
The focus on gender-related journalism aimed to empower women journalists with the skills and knowledge to effectively report on issues related to gender.
“Our dedication to capacity building stems from the belief in the immense potential of women journalists. Recognizing their pivotal role in shaping narratives, influencing public opinion, and contributing to sustainable development goals, we empower them with essential skills to reshape their stories and, consequently, mold the stories of our nation,” said Mr. Odeh.
Underlining the workshop’s significance in empowering women journalists with essential skills in the dynamic landscape of digital communication and social media, Mr. Odeh emphasized that the #NLNGChangeYourStory workshop, initiated in 2015, reflects NLNG’s vision of embracing new technologies and platforms to articulate narratives that resonate in the fast-paced digital age.
Aisha Bura Ibrahim, the National Chairperson of NAWOJ, represented by the association’s National Deputy Chairperson, Lilian Okokwo Ogabu, commended NLNG for supporting women with digital communication skills. She stressed the importance of positioning women journalists for the future in reporting the realities of women and children, especially the girl-child, in Nigeria.
