NLNG Celebrates 35 Years of Building a Better Nigeria

The Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) is celebrating 35 years of significant contributions to Nigeria’s development through natural gas. Incorporated on May 17, 1989, NLNG was established to harness Nigeria’s vast natural gas resources and produce Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) and Natural Gas Liquids (NGLs). Since its inception, NLNG has become a key player in the global gas market, positioning Nigeria as a leading gas-producing country.

NLNG’s journey began a decade after its incorporation when it loaded its first LNG cargo for delivery to Montour Terminal in France. Since then, the company has maintained a reputation as a safe, reliable, and responsible supplier of LNG and NGLs worldwide, significantly enhancing Nigeria’s global standing.

The company’s success is built on core values of safety, integrity, teamwork, respect, excellence, and caring for people. These principles guide NLNG’s operations and business practices, contributing to its assets worth approximately USD 17.5 billion. NLNG is 51% owned by international oil companies and 49% by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC).

Over the years, NLNG has paid about USD 18 billion in dividends and approximately USD 9 billion in taxes to the Federal Government of Nigeria. It has also generated substantial Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) through its plant constructions. Since 2008, NLNG has contributed around 4% of Nigeria’s annual GDP, with an estimated 1% contribution following the GDP rebasing in 2014.

NLNG’s commitment to local development is evident in its creation of over 12,000 jobs during plant construction phases and its promotion of Nigerian manpower through various Nigerian Content plans. The company has also supported local contractors and vendors, fostering capacity building and economic growth within communities.

The company’s environmental contributions include a significant reduction in gas flaring in Nigeria, from 65% to about 20%. NLNG’s domestic LPG supply program has promoted the use of cleaner energy, reducing health risks associated with firewood usage.

NLNG’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives span several areas, including scholarships, community health programs, and infrastructure development. The University Support Programme has provided modern engineering laboratories to six Nigerian universities, and the company’s scholarships have supported Nigerian students in furthering their education abroad.

The company also sponsors prestigious awards such as The Nigeria Prize for Science and The Nigeria Prize for Literature, each worth USD 100,000, promoting excellence in these fields.

NLNG’s significant achievements have been recognized with various awards, including the “Local Content Company of the Year 2022” and commendations from the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB).

As NLNG looks to the future, it remains committed to supporting Nigeria’s economic growth and development. The company’s ambitious Train 7 project is expected to further enhance its global recognition and impact.

Chairman of NLNG Board, HRM King Edmund Daukoru, expressed confidence in NLNG’s continued success, emphasizing its role as a major and reliable LNG supplier. As NLNG celebrates 35 years, it reaffirms its dedication to building a better Nigeria by exploring new opportunities in domestic LNG supply and supporting the power sector.
