NIMASA Donates Ultra-Modern Maritime Training Facility to University of Port Harcourt
The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) recently handed over a state-of-the-art building housing the Institute of Marine and Transport Technology to the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) in Rivers State.
This donation, initiated by previous NIMASA leadership, was completed under the current Director General, Dr. Bashir Jamoh. He emphasized the importance of education in addressing maritime challenges, stating, “Any investment in education is definitely worthwhile. Research has shown that lack of education is relatively responsible for maritime crimes in the Niger Delta Region.”
Dr. Jamoh expressed hope that graduates from the institute will play a crucial role in establishing Nigeria as a leading maritime nation. The new facility is not the only one of its kind, with similar initiatives planned for all six geopolitical zones of the country.
UNIPORT Welcomes the Opportunity
Professor Clifford Ofurum, representing the Vice Chancellor of UNIPORT, Professor Abraham Georgewill, expressed gratitude for being chosen as the location for the institute. He assured NIMASA that the university will provide the necessary faculty to ensure the courses offered are internationally accredited and recognized.
This collaboration between NIMASA and UNIPORT is expected to significantly enhance maritime education and training in Nigeria, contributing to a more skilled and qualified workforce in the maritime sector.
