Nigerians Struggle as Cooking Gas Prices Soar to N1,500 per Kilogram
As the cost of essential fuels continues to climb, Nigerians are now facing a steep rise in the price of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), commonly known as cooking gas, which has reached up to N1,500 per kilogram in certain areas, according to a Punch report.
Recent findings revealed that LPG prices have surged to N1,500 per kilogram in retail outlets across Ogun and Lagos States. In Abuja, the cost of refilling a standard 12.5kg cylinder has increased significantly, now averaging N17,000—up 41.6% from N12,000 in July and N11,735 in January 2024. This price surge follows a broader trend in the market, adding strain to household budgets as many depend on LPG for daily cooking needs.
In response to the rising costs, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, promised in August to collaborate with regulators and gas producers to find ways to bring prices down. Despite these assurances, a recent survey indicates that prices have only continued to rise.
