Nigerian Navy to Enhance Maritime Safety for World Hydrography Day.

The Nigerian Navy is poised to improve the safety of the nation’s maritime environment by providing accurate and updated. hydrographic data and charts, in celebration of the 2024 World Hydrography Day (WHD).

At a media briefing in Abuja, Rear Admiral Ayodele Olugbode, the Hydrographer of the Federation, emphasized the importance of hydrography for safe navigation, marine resource management, and environmental protection. Highlighting the theme for this year’s WHD, “Hydrographic Information: Enhancing Safety, Efficiency, and Sustainability in Marine Activities,” he underscored the critical role of precise hydrographic data.

“Safety is paramount for all maritime stakeholders,” Rear Admiral Olugbode stated. “Accurate hydrographic data allows seafarers to navigate confidently, mitigating risks associated with navigation hazards and ensuring the safety of lives and property at sea.”

The 2024 World Hydrography Day celebrations, occurring from June 14-19 in Abuja, will feature a series of events aimed at showcasing the indispensable role of hydrography in the nation’s maritime environment. These events include awareness lectures on hydrography at selected secondary schools in Abuja, Enugu, Lagos, and Port Harcourt, aimed at inspiring young minds to consider careers in hydrography.

Rear Admiral Olugbode also noted the impact of hydrographic surveys conducted in the Lagos Channel and Bonny River. “These surveys identified and mitigated underwater hazards, significantly reducing maritime accidents. The precision of our charts has enabled vessels to navigate these busy waterways safely and efficiently, demonstrating the critical role of hydrography in maritime safety.”

In 2023, hydrographers highlighted the development of a Digital Twin of the Ocean, a virtual model integrating historic and future hydrographic data to enhance understanding and management of marine environments. This initiative aligns with this year’s theme by promoting the use of hydrographic information to improve safety, efficiency, and sustainability in marine activities.

“Efficiency lies at the heart of sustainable marine activities,” Rear Admiral Olugbode added. “Precise charting and mapping facilitate smoother and more economical maritime operations, minimizing fuel consumption, reducing emissions, and optimizing resource utilization.”

The Nigerian Navy’s commitment to enhancing maritime safety through advanced hydrographic practices underscores the importance of accurate data in safeguarding the maritime environment and supporting sustainable marine activities.
