Nigerian Youth Group Casts Doubt on Ending Gas Flaring by 2030
The Youths and Environmental Advocacy Centre (YEAC-Nigeria) has raised doubts about the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission’s (NUPRC) assertion that routine gas flaring in the nation’s oil and gas activities will cease by 2030.
NUPRC‘s Chief Executive Officer, Gbenga Komolafe, recently unveiled plans aimed at achieving zero gas flaring by 2030 and net-zero carbon emissions by 2060. However, YEAC-Nigeria has voiced skepticism, pointing to past instances of unmet commitments and a perceived absence of tangible actions.
“YEAC-Nigeria dismisses the claim by NUPRC that gas flaring in Nigeria will end by 2030 with a wave of the hand,” said Executive Director Fyneface Dumnamene Fyneface. “The statement is funny and the NUPRC’s Executive Director is a clown for making such a conclusion when there is nothing on the ground to show that gas flaring can even end by 2040.”
Fyneface highlighted the absence of noticeable strides toward gas flaring eradication and questioned the viability of attaining the goal within the next five years. He urged NUPRC to focus on implementing tangible measures and infrastructural advancements instead of issuing impractical statements

“NUPRC should focus their attention on better things and forget about comments like these which are not backed by any atom of preparations and infrastructural development to commercialize flared gas by the year 2030,” Fyneface concluded. “The magic is not possible and only time will tell.”
This news underscores the persistent debate surrounding gas flaring in Nigeria and underscores concerns regarding the government’s dedication to realizing its ambitious environmental objectives.
