Nigeria Urged to Prioritize Ending Energy Poverty, Advocate for CNG Use
Huub Stokman, Chairman of the Major Energies Marketers Association of Nigeria (MEMAN) and Chief Executive Officer of NNPC Retail Services, has called on Nigeria to urgently address its energy poverty crisis. Speaking at the Nigerian International Energy Summit (NIES), Stokman emphasized the global nature of the issue while highlighting Nigeria’s unique position to tackle it.
“Nigeria needs to end energy poverty,” Stokman stated, acknowledging the country’s vast energy resources. He stressed that energy is a crucial driver of economic development and pointed to Nigeria’s diverse energy portfolio, including solar and hydrocarbons, as a significant advantage.

Stokman particularly advocated for the widespread adoption of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) as a cost-effective solution. He noted that CNG, an export fuel, can play a pivotal role in reducing energy costs for Nigerians, especially in the wake of subsidy removal. This call echoes the sentiments of industry experts who have consistently championed CNG as a viable alternative.
