Nigeria and Morocco are intensifying efforts to advance their ambitious gas pipeline project.
Aim to revolutionize energy access across Africa.
In a recent meeting on January 24th, Hon. Ekperikpe Ekpo, Nigeria’s Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), and Ms. Leila Benali, Morocco’s Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, expressed their commitment to accelerating the Nigeria-Morocco pipeline project, citing its potential to stimulate economies, combat energy poverty, and strengthen regional collaboration.
The ministers engaged in high-level talks to explore avenues for expediting the gas pipeline project, building upon Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) signed in 2022, which outlined a collaborative framework for the initiative.
The envisioned mega pipeline would span an impressive 5,300 kilometers, starting in Nigeria and winding through multiple West African countries before reaching Morocco. An additional 1,700-kilometer spur could extend to northern Morocco, with potential connectivity to Spain.
The primary goal of the pipeline is to transport a substantial 30 billion cubic meters of gas annually, providing a reliable and affordable energy source for millions across the continent, especially in regions facing power shortages and limited access to clean energy.
Beyond serving as an energy conduit, the project aspires to foster economic and regional cooperation among African nations. It aims to promote infrastructure development, generate employment, and strengthen trade ties.

Securing the substantial funding required for such a large-scale project remains a major hurdle, prompting both countries to actively seek investors and explore various financing options. Navigating the intricate logistics of construction across multiple countries and addressing potential political and environmental concerns will also require meticulous planning and diplomatic efforts.
