NERC Warns DisCos Against Charging Customers for Faulty Meter Replacements
The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has cautioned Distribution Companies (DisCos) against imposing charges on customers for replacing faulty or obsolete electricity meters.
In a public notice, NERC condemned these practices, describing them as violations of Order No. NERC/246/2021, which outlines the structured replacement process for defective and outdated meters in the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI).
The Commission clarified that it is the sole responsibility of DisCos to replace faulty meters at no cost to the customer, except in cases where the damage is proven to have been caused by the customer.
Ban on Estimated Billing for Metered Customers
NERC further emphasized that customers with meters should not be transitioned to estimated billing systems, which often lead to inflated charges.
“The Commission restates its commitment to protect customers’ interests and rights by ensuring compliance with regulatory standards and imposing penalties for violations,” the notice read.

To ensure adherence, NERC has urged customers to report any cases of non-compliance through the following contact channels:
