NERC Reports 5.8 Million Metered Electricity Customers in Nigeria

According to the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), the number of prepaid meter users in Nigeria has reached 5,885,687 out of a total of 13,231,807 registered electricity customers nationwide.

As of January 2024, all 12 electricity distribution companies (Discos) in the country collectively metered only 42,961 customers, which accounts for just 1.54% of the total registered customers.

NERC’s data reveals that the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (Disco) leads with the highest number of metered customers at 1,054,740, representing 43.53% of its 2,423,454 registered customers.

This is followed by Ikeja Disco, which has metered 902,288 customers, constituting 72.64% of its 1,242,125 registered customers. Conversely, Aba Power Disco has the lowest number of metered customers at 56,512, accounting for 29.40% of its 192,216 registered customers.

Yola Disco also lags with only 126,489 metered customers, representing 15.5% of its 814,653 registered customers. In January 2024 alone, NERC received a total of 98,502 complaints from electricity customers regarding various issues such as metering, billing, service interruptions, load shedding, disconnections, and voltage concerns.

Among the Discos, Ibadan and Eko Discos received the highest numbers of complaints, with 16,382 and 10,641 complaints, respectively. On the other hand, Benin and Yola Discos had the fewest complaints from customers, with nine and 568 complaints, respectively.

Notably, metering issues accounted for 63.03% of the total complaints received from customers across all 12 Discos in the country, highlighting the persistent challenges in this aspect of the electricity supply chain.
