NERC Grants Alaro City Dual Power Licenses: 10MW Generation & Independent Distribution

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has issued two key licenses to Alaro Connect Free Zone Enterprise, boosting private involvement in the nation’s power sector. This move aims to enhance electricity generation and distribution within the Alaro City development in Epe, Lagos State.

The Licenses:

  • Embedded Electricity Generation: This 10-megawatt license allows Alaro City to generate its own electricity, reducing reliance on the national grid and potentially creating a more stable power supply within the Free Zone.
  • Independent Electricity Distribution: This license empowers Alaro Connect to distribute electricity within the Free Zone, offering greater control and potentially improved service for businesses operating there.

Boosting Domestic Power:

This news aligns with the efforts of the Federal Government, as highlighted by Power Minister Adebayo Adelabu at the 2023 Nigeria Energy Summit. Minister Adelabu reiterated the government’s commitment to increasing Nigeria’s power generation capacity to 20,000 MW within the next three years. He emphasized the importance of setting achievable targets and finding practical solutions to address the nation’s electricity challenges.

Significance of the Licenses:

Looking Ahead:

The NERC licenses for Alaro City are a positive step towards a more diverse and dynamic power sector in Nigeria. Continued government support and private sector involvement will be key to achieving the ambitious targets set by Minister Adelabu and ultimately improving access to reliable electricity for all Nigerians.
