NDPHC Strengthens Human Capacity through Internship Program
The Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC) Limited is making significant strides in developing the next generation of engineers in Nigeria through its Internship Program, a key part of the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative. This program is designed to provide practical, hands-on experience to young Nigerian engineering graduates from across the country’s six geopolitical zones, offering them an opportunity to gain valuable insights into the power generation industry.
The inaugural cohort of interns recently concluded a year-long tenure at various NDPHC Power Plants, where they were immersed in different aspects of the power generation value chain. This experience allowed them to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world scenarios, enhancing their understanding of the complexities and operational challenges in the energy sector.
NDPHC, which oversees the National Integrated Power Project (NIPP) assets, is uniquely positioned to offer these extensive training opportunities. The company owns 10 Power Plants, eight of which are currently operational, with a combined generation capacity of 4,015MW. In addition to power generation, NDPHC’s operations extend to managing transmission lines and distribution substations, providing interns with a comprehensive exposure to the entire power supply chain.
As the first cohort of interns completed their program, the NDPHC’s Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) team conducted assessments to gauge both the performance of the interns and the overall impact of the internship program. During a visit to the Omotosho Power Plant in Ondo State, the M&E team received highly positive feedback from the plant’s management, who praised the interns for their contributions and the skills they brought to the table. This feedback highlighted the potential for some of these interns to transition into full-time employment with NDPHC.
The success of this internship program has been marked by the interns’ strong grasp of Power Plant operations and their ability to work effectively as part of a team. The program not only provided them with essential industry skills but also prepared them for future roles within Nigeria’s power sector, contributing to the development of a skilled workforce that is critical to the country’s energy infrastructure.
Looking ahead, NDPHC is committed to continuing this CSR initiative, recognizing its dual benefit of advancing the careers of young engineers while giving back to the Nigerian community. The company’s dedication to human capital development is evident in its plans to sustain and expand the internship program, ensuring that more graduates have the opportunity to gain meaningful industry experience.
In line with this commitment, NDPHC has announced that the advertisement for the second cohort of interns will begin on May 27, coinciding with the graduation ceremony of the first cohort. This next phase of the program is expected to attract a new group of eager graduates ready to embark on their journey into the power generation industry, further solidifying NDPHC’s role as a leader in both corporate social responsibility and human capacity development in Nigeria.
