NDDC Set to Transfer Ondo Power Project Operations to TCN Ahead of Launch.

The Governing Board of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) proudly announces the completion of the 132/33kv electricity sub-station at Ode-Erinje in Okitipupa Local Government Area of Ondo State.

This signals the imminent inauguration of this vital infrastructure. Additionally, this achievement paves the way for the planned handover of the sub-station to the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) for seamless operational management.

This significant milestone closely follows the recent signing of a performance bond between the Commission and the Ministry of Niger Delta Development. Once operational, the electricity sub-station is set to illuminate over 2,000 communities spanning five local government areas within Ondo State’s oil-producing region, effectively ending decades of darkness and positively impacting countless lives.

The power project’s scope includes the efficient evacuation of electricity from Omotosho, with a step-down at Ode-Erinje, Okitipupa, facilitated through a 132KV double circuit transmission line featuring two 30/40MVA transformers. The transmission lines, spanning Ode-Erinje, Okitipupa, are supported by 145 electricity towers.

However, due to past delays, the distribution lines, low-tension distribution networks, and relief transformers have suffered vandalism and require comprehensive rehabilitation. The NDDC has already awarded a contract for the total rehabilitation of these crucial components, a process currently underway and expected to conclude soon.

While the responsibility for rehabilitating the distribution network typically falls under the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC), the NDDC has proactively stepped in to expedite the connection of power lines to the injection sub-station. This effort aims to ensure that beneficiary communities seamlessly access electricity from the national grid.

In July 2023, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, the Managing Director of NDDC, along with Commission management members, held discussions with Hon. Lucky Aiyedatiwa, then Acting Governor of Ondo State, at the Government House in Akure. The agenda focused on finalizing the electricity project and facilitating its swift commissioning and handover to TCN.

Hon. Aiyedatiwa commended NDDC’s impactful project, highlighting its transformative significance for communities long deprived of reliable electricity. He also appealed for support in extending the distribution network to reach Ilaje Local Government Area, recognizing the profound impact such expansion would have on the region.

Acknowledging the pivotal role of the Ondo State government, NDDC appreciates the diligent coordination efforts of the state Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, collaborating with the Commission, other stakeholders, and TCN toward this remarkable achievement.
