NDDC Builds Multi-Purpose Emergency Shelters Ahead of Anticipated Flooding
The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) is constructing six multi-purpose emergency shelters across Bayelsa, Delta, and Rivers states to provide refuge for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the event of flooding in the Niger Delta. This initiative was revealed by NDDC Managing Director, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, during a press conference at the Commission’s headquarters in Port Harcourt.
Dr. Ogbuku stated that the shelters are part of the Commission’s proactive measures to mitigate the impact of recurrent floods in the region. These facilities will feature essential amenities, including a school, hospital, cafeteria, police post, and recreation center, offering comprehensive support to affected communities during crises.
“We have six of these facilities currently under construction in Otuokpoti and Odi in Bayelsa State, Patani and Ozorro in Delta State, and two more in Rivers State,” Ogbuku confirmed.
In addition to addressing flooding concerns, Ogbuku emphasized NDDC’s ongoing efforts to improve security and boost economic activities through the “Light Up the Niger Delta” campaign, which has reduced criminality in various communities by installing solar-powered street lights.
He also highlighted the Commission’s youth empowerment programs, announcing the forthcoming launch of the Holistic Opportunities Programme of Engagement (HOPE) and the NDDC Youth Internship Scheme, designed to equip youths with entrepreneurial skills.
“Our goal is to provide meaningful, self-sustaining skills for the youth, enabling them to support their families and communities while promoting peace in the region,” Ogbuku said.
On the topic of entrepreneurship, Ogbuku pointed to the Commission’s collaboration with the Niger Delta Chambers of Commerce to support farmers and entrepreneurs. He also announced plans to distribute 45,000 U-lesson tablets to schools across the region, in an effort to prepare the next generation for a technology-driven future.
Ogbuku further listed some of the Commission’s major accomplishments, including the completion of impactful infrastructure projects across the nine Niger Delta states. These include the 25.7-kilometre Ogbia-Nembe Road in partnership with Shell, the 132KV Transmission Line in Ondo State, and the Ibeno Bridge in Akwa Ibom, among others.
