Namibia International Energy Conference 2024: Fueling Economic Growth through Energy Innovation
Windhoek, Namibia – February 5, 2024
In a bid to harness its energy potential for economic prosperity, Namibia is gearing up for the highly anticipated Namibia International Energy Conference (NIEC) set to take place from April 23-25, 2024, at Droombos Estate Windhoek. This conference aims to bring together key stakeholders, including government officials, private companies, investors, and global thought leaders, to explore and unlock the vast opportunities within Namibia’s energy sector.
Under the theme “Reimagine Resource-Rich Namibia: Turning Possibilities into Prosperity,” the NIEC 2024 will focus on the transformative impact of Namibia’s recent oil discoveries and the rapid developments in renewable energy. Industry leaders, including giants such as Shell, TotalEnergies, and Qatar Energy, in collaboration with NAMCOR, have opened up the Orange Basin, leading to a series of new discoveries.
Galp Energia’s recent announcements in PEL 83 and the entrance of new players like Chevron, Pancontinental, Woodside, and ExxonMobil further underscore the country’s potential as a regional energy and investment hub.
Namibia is not only making waves offshore but also onshore, with companies like Reconnaissance Africa actively exploring the Kavango Basin. The government, led by President Hage Geingob, has played a pivotal role in creating a business-friendly environment that attracts international investors, positioning Namibia as an attractive market for energy development.
Selma Shimutwikeni, CEO of RichAfrica Consultancy and convenor of NIEC 2024, emphasized the strategic importance of this moment in Namibia’s history. “Our newfound energy resources present immense potential, but they also come with profound responsibilities. We must strategically prepare ourselves to harness the full value chain of these resources,” said Shimutwikeni, emphasizing the conference’s vision to create a prosperous, inclusive, and sustainable future.
In addition to upstream success, Namibia is making strides in green hydrogen initiatives, innovative technologies, gas-to-power infrastructure, and collaborative efforts. The commitment to environmental sustainability and renewable energy has gained international recognition, with projects like Hyphen Hydrogen Energy’s $10 billion green hydrogen project showcasing Namibia’s dedication to a sustainable future.
The NIEC 2024 agenda includes exploration updates, local content and skills development, logistics and infrastructure, technological advancements, liquefied natural gas, power generation, green hydrogen, and financing the energy sector. Tom Alweendo, Namibia’s Minister of Mines and Energy, will once again patronize the conference, and it is expected to attract a delegation of ministers from energy-rich countries, fostering cross-border cooperation and networking.
With a track record of over 2000 participants in the previous year, NIEC 2024 aims to surpass these achievements by offering rich content, unparalleled networking opportunities, and valuable insights into Namibia’s evolving energy landscape.
