Minister of Power Reviews Progress on Presidential Power Initiative’s Phase 1 Deployment
In a groundbreaking move towards bolstering Nigeria’s power infrastructure, the Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, alongside Mr. Kenny Anuwe, MD/CEO of FGN Power Company, conducted a comprehensive inspection today at NEMSA facilities in Lagos. The purpose of this visit was to assess the readiness of mobile substations crucial for Phase 1 deployment under the Presidential Power Initiative (PPI).
The FGN Power Company recently received Ten (10) Power Transformers and Ten (10) Mobile Substations from Siemens Energy, a critical step forward for the initiative. These state-of-the-art equipment pieces are being strategically deployed across key sites nationwide, including locations like Okene, Amukpe, Potiskum, Apo, Ihovbor, Birnin Kebbi, Ajah, Nike Lake, Kwanar Dangora, Maryland, Omouaran, Ojo, among others. This deployment is set to alleviate transmission capacity constraints by over 1300MW, a significant leap in Nigeria’s energy landscape.
Chief Adelabu highlighted the importance of these Mobile Substations, citing their role in upgrading capacity swiftly and addressing immediate energy demands. “Mobile Substations can be manufactured and shipped to Nigeria within one year,” he noted, emphasizing their quick installation process compared to traditional substations.
Mr. Anuwe echoed these sentiments, underlining FGN Power Company’s dedication to supporting the PPI’s objectives. “These substations are instrumental in addressing longstanding challenges within our power sector,” he affirmed, reaffirming the company’s commitment to infrastructure development and operational excellence.
The PPI, established by the Presidency as a special purpose vehicle (SPV), signifies a monumental effort to transform Nigeria’s Power Sector. With Siemens as the technical partner and support from various stakeholders including the German Government, EPC companies, financiers, regulators, and agencies, the initiative aims to achieve commercial autonomy in the Nigeria Electricity Supply Industry (NESI).
The inspection signifies a crucial milestone in Nigeria’s journey towards energy sufficiency and economic prosperity. By prioritizing infrastructure investments, capacity building, and institutional reform, the PPI aims to enhance the reliability, accessibility, and affordability of electricity across the nation.
The Government’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and excellence in infrastructure project execution is evident through initiatives like the PPI, showcasing Nigeria’s determination to overcome challenges and unlock its full potential in the energy sector.
