Minister Highlights Steel Sector’s Potential to Boost Development in Oil and Gas Industry

During the 8th Sub-Saharan Africa International Petroleum Exhibition and Conference (SAIPEC) in Lagos State, the Minister of State for Steel Development, Uba Ahmadu, emphasized the critical role of the steel sector in advancing Nigeria’s oil and gas industry.

Ahmadu highlighted the indispensable nature of steel in extracting valuable resources essential for the country’s economy. He underscored the pivotal role steel plays in creating components vital for oil and gas exploration, production, and transportation.

Furthermore, Ahmadu reiterated the government’s commitment to revitalizing the steel sector, aligning with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s ‘Renewed Hope’ agenda for sustainable development.

“The establishment of the Ministry of Steel Development is a strategic and visionary move to advance Nigeria’s industrialisation and economic diversification. This aligns with the overarching goals of the ‘Renewed Hope’ agenda, including industrialisation, job creation, economic empowerment and sustainable development,” noted Maigari.

In his address to industry stakeholders, Maigari emphasized the critical need for collaboration between the Ministry of Steel Development and the oil and gas sector. He underscored that oil and gas exploration and production rely heavily on steel fabrication to create durable structures capable of withstanding the harsh conditions of the industry.

To foster partnership opportunities, Maigari stated, “We are open to collaboration, joint ventures and knowledge sharing, aiming to create a mutually beneficial ecosystem that drives growth and prosperity for both industries.” He emphasized the importance of stakeholders tapping into the potential of the Nigerian steel sector, underscoring the advantages of local content development, job creation, and fostering sustainable economic growth.

Ahmadu recognized the crucial role played by the National Metallurgical Training Institute (NMTI) in providing specialized training and equipping Nigerians with essential skills for the oil and gas sector.

He commended the Petroleum Technology Association of Nigeria (PETAN) for acknowledging the importance of the steel sector and anticipated that SAIPEC 2024 would facilitate valuable connections, collaborative ventures, and innovation in both industries.

In a separate event commemorating the 75th anniversary of Dorman Long Engineering, Ahmadu praised the company’s success story, highlighting its transformative impact through collaboration. Acknowledging Dorman Long’s commitment to excellence, he expressed confidence in the company’s leadership in shaping a new era for steel in Nigeria.
