Minister Ekperikpe Ekpo Advocates for Pipeline Investment Following Ogun State Gas Truck Accident
Rt. Hon. Ekperikpe Ekpo, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), embarked on a visit to the site of a tragic gas explosion in Ita Oshin, Abeokuta, Ogun State. The incident, which resulted in loss of life and property, occurred when a CNG-laden truck experienced brake failure, crashing into a road barricade and igniting into flames.
Accompanied by key officials including the Authority Chief Executive (ACE) of NMDPRA, Farouk Ahmed, and members of his technical team, Minister Ekpo was received by Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun. The governor expressed gratitude for the visit and emphasized the need for a thorough investigation to uncover the accident’s root cause and implement preventive measures.
Deputy Governor Mrs. Noimot Salako-Oyedele and state officials guided Minister Ekpo and his team through an inspection of the accident site. Expressing condolences to affected families and Gasco Marine Ltd., the truck’s owners, Minister Ekpo commended the prompt response of fire service personnel and first responders.
Looking ahead, Minister Ekpo outlined a strategic shift in gas distribution, advocating for increased investment in pipeline infrastructure over traditional trucking methods. He emphasized the importance of issuing distribution licenses that mandate distributors to invest in pipeline installations, ensuring direct gas delivery to end-users.
