Minister of Power Commends Savannah Energy’s Role in Advancing Nigeria’s Energy Sector
In a recent visit to the Uquo Central Processing Facility (CPF) in Akwa Ibom State, the Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, lauded Savannah Energy, a British independent energy company, for its significant contributions to Nigeria’s energy sector. Owned by Accugas Limited, a subsidiary of Savannah Energy, the Uquo CPF plays a pivotal role in bolstering the domestic gas market, a crucial component of Nigeria’s national development strategy.
Chief Adelabu expressed his admiration for the Uquo gas facility, describing it as a testament to Savannah Energy’s confidence in Nigeria’s economy and a substantial investment in the country’s energy infrastructure. He urged other companies within the gas industry to follow Accugas’s example to help address Nigeria’s ongoing power challenges.
“We are calling on other companies to emulate the activities of Accugas so that the unreliable supply of gas that we have will be a thing of the past. They have been tried, they have been tested, and they are trusted. One other thing I also noted is their investment in a new gas compressor to boost pressure for gas supplies. It is a significant investment. We really appreciate it, and we will continue to be partners,” the Minister stated.
Chief Adelabu also praised the company’s commitment to social impact projects, highlighting the job opportunities created both directly and indirectly, along with their corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives and environmental stewardship. He encouraged Savannah Energy to continue its expansion plans to further enhance gas supply across the nation.
Pade Durotoye, Managing Director of Savannah Energy in Nigeria, affirmed the company’s support for the Federal Government’s initiative to adopt natural gas as a transition fuel in Nigeria’s journey towards a net-zero carbon future, particularly in power generation. He emphasized that Accugas has invested in a nameplate 200 MMscfpd processing facility, backed by a ~260km pipeline network dedicated to serving the domestic market.
“All our gas is consumed domestically, with 80% being sold to power generation companies, which account for approximately 20% of Nigeria’s thermal generation capacity for the grid. In addition, the gas supplied by Accugas enables about 10% of the country’s cement production,” Durotoye stated.
He further announced that Accugas has invested an additional US$45 million in a new compression system at the Uquo facility. This system, comprising two parallel trains with a capacity of 160 MMscfpd each, is designed to increase gas export pressure to a maximum of 81 bar gauge, ensuring reliable gas supplies for years to come. The project is expected to be completed and operational later this year.
Savannah Energy’s efforts continue to be a vital part of Nigeria’s energy sector, contributing to both economic growth and sustainable development.
