Miners Applaud Reversal of Five-Year Mining Ban in Zamfara State.

Stakeholders in Nigeria’s mining sector have expressed their appreciation to the Federal Government for lifting the five-year ban on mineral exploration activities in Zamfara State. The commendation followed the recent announcement by the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Dele Alake, who cited improved security in the region as a key factor for the decision.

The mining ban, imposed in 2019, aimed to curb banditry and illegal mining, which were reportedly fueling insecurity in Zamfara. However, miners and industry stakeholders have long lamented the economic toll it took on the sector and the nation.

Sector Leaders React

Mr. Dele Ayankele, National President of the Miners Association of Nigeria (MAN), welcomed the move, highlighting the financial losses incurred during the ban. According to Ayankele, the prohibition deprived the government of significant revenue while also imposing financial hardships on leaseholders.

“Insecurity and banditry led to the ban, but they also caused excessive budgetary allocations to maintain peace in the region,” Ayankele said. He added that many mining leaseholders faced mounting debts, equipment degradation, and loss of livelihoods.

Ayankele also praised Dr. Alake’s efforts and called for robust measures to sustain the security gains in Zamfara. He underscored the importance of inter-ministerial collaboration in safeguarding mining sites across the country.

Patrick Odiegwu, Secretary of the Association of Miners and Processors of Barite (AMAPOB), echoed these sentiments, describing the reversal as a positive and much-needed decision. He warned that prolonged economic inactivity in mining communities could exacerbate insecurity as residents turn to illegal activities for survival.

Calls for Technological Advancements

Odiegwu emphasized the role of modern technology in maintaining security at mining sites. He advocated for the use of artificial intelligence, robotics, and advanced surveillance systems to monitor activities in mining regions effectively.

“Analog security measures cannot match the capabilities of a modern monitoring system. With advanced technologies, the government can secure mining sites without risking the lives of security personnel,” Odiegwu explained.

He stressed the need for proactive strategies to keep bandits at bay and maintain the stability achieved in Zamfara.

The Federal Government’s decision to reverse the ban reflects its commitment to fostering economic growth while addressing security challenges through sustainable measures.
