Mine Pit Collapse in Niger State Kills One, Traps 30.

A mining pit collapse in Galkogo village, Niger State, has resulted in the death of one person and left 30 others trapped, according to the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA).

The collapse occurred at an underground gold mine on Monday, following heavy rains that softened the soil around the pit, triggering the disaster. Six miners have been rescued with serious injuries, NSEMA spokesperson Hussaini Ibrahim said in a statement.

Rescue operations are currently underway, with excavators being used to reach the trapped miners. However, efforts are being hindered by difficult conditions and ongoing insecurity in the area, Ibrahim noted.

Niger State is known for its rich mineral resources but faces significant challenges related to security. Large-scale mining operations are often threatened by armed groups, and safety standards are poorly enforced at numerous unregulated small-scale mines, exacerbating the risks for miners.

The collapse highlights the urgent need for improved safety measures and regulations in Nigeria’s mining sector to protect workers and prevent such tragedies.
