Microsoft Pledges $1M to Train One Million Nigerians in AI

Microsoft has committed $1 million over the next two years to enhance Artificial Intelligence (AI) skills for one million Nigerians, aiming to drive digital innovation and economic growth.

The announcement was made by Microsoft’s Country Manager for Nigeria, Ola Williams, during the launch of the Microsoft AI Tour in Lagos on Wednesday.

“This investment is a strategic move to ensure Nigerians not only have access to AI technology but can also develop advanced solutions and build AI-driven businesses for long-term economic sustainability,” Williams stated.

She emphasized that the initiative is designed to position Nigeria as a major player in the global AI ecosystem by equipping individuals with the expertise needed for innovation, entrepreneurship, and economic competitiveness.

Calling it a “historic moment” for Microsoft in Nigeria, Williams highlighted the presence of Microsoft’s African leadership as a testament to the program’s significance.

“Their presence underscores the importance of this initiative and reflects our leaders’ strong commitment. It also reinforces Microsoft’s confidence in Nigeria’s potential to leverage AI in transforming businesses, startups, and enterprises,” she added.

Expanding AI Education Across Sectors

The AI training program will cater to leaders, developers, young professionals, and government officials. Williams noted that Microsoft will collaborate with key stakeholders to ensure broad accessibility.

“We remain committed to working with partners to make this skilling platform available to anyone eager to take advantage of it,” she said.

This investment aligns with Nigeria’s broader digital transformation agenda, positioning the country as a leader in Africa’s technology-driven economy.

Microsoft Africa President, Lillian Barnard, expressed her excitement about expanding AI initiatives in Nigeria, stressing the need to focus on Africa’s growing digital landscape.

“I’m personally thrilled to bring AI to Nigeria. While AI adoption is rising globally, it is essential to prioritize Africa—my key area of responsibility. Nigeria, along with South Africa, Egypt, and Kenya, plays a central role in this effort,” Barnard stated.

Microsoft has been present in Africa for over 30 years but only recently unified its operations across the continent under a single leadership team. Barnard described this restructuring as a “game-changer,” allowing Microsoft to align Africa’s strategy with its global mission of empowering individuals and organizations through technology.

AI as a Catalyst for Africa’s Digital Revolution

“Our vision for Africa is rooted in fostering inclusive and sustainable economic growth by leveraging Microsoft’s technology to create new opportunities. While Africa participated in the Fourth Industrial Revolution, it wasn’t at the forefront. Now, with the Fifth Industrial Revolution centered on AI we have the chance to accelerate progress,” Barnard explained.

Microsoft is dedicated to working with governments, businesses, and individuals to integrate AI across key industries, particularly in Nigeria’s rapidly growing financial services sector.

The company has already launched similar AI training programs in South Africa as part of its AI Tour, reinforcing its long-term commitment to developing African talent.

Barnard also highlighted Microsoft’s shift in digital education, moving beyond basic digital literacy to advanced AI-focused training.

“With AI-related jobs in high demand and many positions remaining unfilled due to a shortage of skilled professionals, it is essential to equip Africa’s youth with the right tools to seize these opportunities,” she said.

Strengthening AI Infrastructure and Partnerships

Microsoft’s strategy includes investments in AI skilling, infrastructure, and partnerships with industry leaders.

“There’s a lot of exciting AI-driven work happening in Nigeria, especially in financial services. We are collaborating with banks and other partners to harness AI’s full potential. I’m eager to see how Nigeria contributes to Africa’s broader AI transformation and how our local team will help lead this change,” Barnard concluded.
